Eric Richardson was born in a small town in Northwest Indiana. As a young man, while out watching the corn grow, his imagination overtook the scenery and his pens and paint brushes overtook his notebooks. With prompting, he studied illustration at the American Academy of Art (1996) and then fully re-located to Chicago. Over the next decade, in addition to becoming accomplished in oversized set-design, Richardson exhibited public and commercial murals and sculptures both regionally and nationally. Combining these skills, a hell of a lot of leftover childhood imaginings, and inspiration from the (ever popular) low brow art movement, he created what you see here; his canvas.

As an artist, “Eyeball” Richardson wants to encourage the viewer to follow the movement of paint and feel the radiating power that lies underneath vibrant color. A can of spilled paint and globs of erratic color at a prop studio can inspire a new painting. Staring at the splattered floor becomes a theme, and then an image. He wants us to follow the journey through his eyeballs and see the humor that is anywhere you choose to look.

Joe Iurato

Joe Iurato signs his work :01. It’s his belief that a single second is the most powerful measurement of time; it only takes a second to decide you’re going to move forward in a positive direction, regardless of the obstacles and challenges you’re facing in life. “From that decisive moment on,” he says, “you should never look back.”

Joe works primarily with hand cut stencils and spray paint. His love for the medium began in 2005, when he would often meander into the streets of SoHo, NYC on his lunch break to absorb the ever-changing gallery of public art, and at times even contribute some of his own. In 2008, during a delicate transition, Joe suddenly found himself being consumed by stenciling - and it quickly marked the biggest turning point in his life. It was then that he developed the concept of :01 and decided to live by its meaning.

He hopes the lion share of his art, whether on the street or in a gallery, inspires people to do good things. He also believes it is our universal responsibility and priority to keep our children’s minds free from ignorance, bias, greed and hate – because what happens tomorrow will depend on the values instilled in them today. It is a message he’s known to share often within his work and is very passionate about continuing.

Electric Windows Come's to life with amazing and beautifully rendered works

For the second year in a row Dan and Kalene (Owners of Open Space Gallery) in Beacon, NY held their ever-successful live art event Electric Windows and this year Art Asylum Boston was happy to show their support for both the project and the contributing artists bringing beauty to the vacant faceless warehouse. The event featured over 25 renowned artists who came together to revitalize the dilapidated warehouse that once served as an Electric Blanket factory (hence the name "Electric Windows") during the 19th century.

Participating artists included, Ron English, Chor Boogie, Gaia, Art Asylum Boston featured Artist Joe Iurato, Logan Hicks, Cern, Pete Wollaeger and many more. In addition to this amazing outdoor art event, Open Space teamed with Buxtonia of Ad Hoc gallery to provide live screen printing, Music and food, making it an even larger community based experience for artists and patrons.

Born in 1966, the youngest of three children, Miguel Paredes grew up in the Upper West side of Manhattans 73rd Street, between Amsterdam and Columbus, where the tar and concrete urban playgrounds of Central Park, Lincoln Center, the Bronx and the lower east side were also home to the vibrant Hip-hop and break dance revolutions of the times. A precocious talent, Miguel began painting at a very early age. Surrounded by the paintings and drawings that his father collected of Dali, Miró, Magritte and Calder, Miguels private world was a place he absorbed books of paintings and artist biographies; not to mention the other cultural mediums first born the same year he was: The Green Hornet, Archie Comics, Batman, and Godzilla.

The early 1980s in New York City were exciting times for a young artist who later enrolled at the prestigious Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art. The so-called underground art movements of the mid 1970s and mid 1980s were far from underground in Paredes world. The impact of artists like Warhol and Haring, the short-lived but powerful world of graffiti art, and even the early roots of Low Bro were the daily conventions of junior high school style and attitude. In this world art was displayed to reach as many eyes in as many places as possible and the young Paredes embraced the force and exuberance of a new language that was freeing, uninhibited and massive in its appeal.

The following video documents Jesse Reno's painting process, as he works on 4 paintings simultaneously from start to finish. one of the paintings becomes collaged into one of the others so he ends with 3 finished pieces.

The idea was to document Jesse's process as pure and true to form as possible. jumping from one piece to another and back again as the impulses and urges push and pull him. painting over layer after layer as he searches for just the right feeling, composition, meaning, and colors he needs to see to call a painting finished.

Through out the video there are still shots that hold every so often to help the viewer better see each piece in its entirety during its process. this should help "you" the viewer keep track of whats going on.. good luck..you might need to see it twice to fully understand it..

The video was shot over the course of 4 days, in the course of approximately 36 hrs. it was all shot as a series of still photographs adding up to approximately 30,000 photos. Wisa Kuuttila shot all the photos and assembled them into the animation. Jesse composed, recorded, and produced all the music.

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada's Tribute to Spanish Architect Enric Miralles

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada's latest sand painting was created (transformed and undone) on July 3rd, 2010. The portrait is of Enric Miralles, a Spanish architect who died at the early age 44 leaving an amazing legacy. His wife, architect Benedetta Tagliabue and their studio EMBT, organized the work and a picnic for family and friends to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Enric´s death.

Saying goodbye to a pioneer: Rammellzee

Rammellzee, an early graffiti writer, hip-hop pioneer and performance artist whose style influenced the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill, died Sunday in Far Rockaway, Queens, where he was raised. He lived in Battery Park City.

He was 49 and died after a long illness, said his wife, Carmela Zagari Rammellzee.

He became known in graffiti circles in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s for hitting the A train and other lines around Queens with his spiky-lettered work. He appeared in one of the most important graffiti and hip-hop films, Charlie Ahearn’s “Wild Style.” In 1983 his on-again-off-again friend, the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, helped produce and illustrated the record cover for “Beat Bop,” a 12-inch single by Rammellzee and K-Rob that became one of Rammellzee’s best-known performances and a hip-hop touchstone. It became the unofficial theme song for Henry Chalfant and Tony Silver’s graffiti documentary “Style Wars.”

He was an eccentric, outsize figure almost never photographed without wearing one of the elaborate science-fiction inspired masks and costumes that he made along with the sculpture and paintings that became the mainstays of his career in later years. He fashioned himself as an urban philosopher, whose overarching theory, which he called Gothic Futurism, posited that graffiti writers were trying to liberate the mystical power of letters from the strictures of modern alphabetical standardization and had inherited this mission in part from medieval monks.

“He didn’t separate his fantastic work from his life,” Mr. Ahearn said. “So when he spoke to you, he often spoke in character and that could sometimes be upsetting.” He legally changed his name to Rammellzee when he was younger, Mr. Ahearn said. As to the name he was born with, Mr. Ahearn said that he knew it, but would keep it to himself, in keeping with his friend’s wishes.

Miguel Paredes was born in New York in 1966 and is of a Latin American descent. He is an artist and self-proclaimed “urban impressionist” who combines the exhilarating sense of New York graffiti art with the skill and perceptiveness of a true exceptional artist.

Growing up 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s. His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged headlong into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.

At the age of 27, Paredes took a studio at the Art Center of South Florida, where at a young age became one of their most prosperous artists focusing mainly on mixed media and conceptual art. At one of his first showings he sold all of his pieces and broke into the Miami Beach art scene. He ultimately took his own private studio space on Lincoln Road and painted for hours on end. Local venues often offered their space to showcase Paredes’ work and he later did shows with artists like Ronnie Cutrone, Skot Olsen, Tes One, And Sas and Colin Christian.

Kevin Peterson was born in 1979 in Elko, Nevada. After a childhood which included stints in Nevada, Michigan and Washington, Kevin arrived in Texas in 1996. He studied art and psychology at Austin college in Sherman, TX. He received degrees in Fine Art and Psychology in 2001.

Kevin pursued a career in social work after graduating. He worked as a Probation Officer in Austin for 3 years.
During this time, difficulties with drugs and alcohol plagued his life and eventually led to an arrest and the loss of his job. While in a drug/alcohol treatment facility, Kevin rediscovered his love and passion for creating art. He decided to pursue this passion after completion of the treatment program.

Kevin has been sober since July 30th, 2005 and has been immersed in his art ever since.

Kevin now makes his home in Houston, TX where he works out of Winter Street Studios.

The team at Art Asylum Boston has had the pleasure of visiting with both the Coordinators & Artists participating in the Eames Chair project, during our visit we had the opportunity to learn more about the endevours in detail & the efforts that went into putting together such a spectacular project.

The amazing people over at Operation Design have launched their first ambitious fund raising project, a collection of iconic Eames® Molded Plywood Chairs “re-imagined” by 20 prominent graffiti & street artists including Billi Kid and Blanco will be up for live auction to benefit Operation Design’s programming for 2010, beginning May 11th & ending on June 1st at http://www.opdesign.org (bidding starts at $1,000).

In his work he is primarily interested in exploring issues of race, social justice and popular culture especially as they relate to the social and cultural ambiguity underlying the experiences of the Latin American male.

Because of his background in Architecture, his work has a lot of textures and layering which hint at the domesticity of a particular built environment. This environment combined with symbols, forms, and colors superimposed and buried into a surface portray time, build a vernacular aesthetic and respond to the human condition.

Once 5' work reflects on the paradoxical nature of his life experiences as a first generation Dominican-American. As a naturalized citizen he lacked the genuine Americanness of being “natural born.” The more he understood these issues, the more he realized that neither of the cultures with which he identified wholly accepted him. In the Dominican Republic, he is considered strictly American; a foreigner who lacks Caribbean sabor. In the United States, He is seen as a person with ambiguous racial origin making the natives conclude that he is not “one of them.” Because neither culture readily accepts him, his paintings are worlds where he fits in.

"My art serves as a bridge between these contrasting worlds. The protagonists in my paintings come from places where hope and desperation live side-by-side. I see it as my job to lift the veil of distortion surrounding my community to reveal a place and a people who are ripe with potential. Often times, I am my own protagonist"

Collin Van Der Sluijs

At the age of 11 Collin started working on the streets, a year later he attended the school for traditional painting in Goes, the Netherlands where he learned the old techniques from painting and the theory from all paint mediums, and how to applicate them.

In 1996 he graduated as the best student and was accepted for a 4 year painting and graphic education at St.Lucas in Boxtel, the Netherlands.

Graduated in 2000, and he attended the art-academy St. Joost in Breda, the Netherlands. He studied illustration for 4 years and graduated with a bachelor-title in 2004. During the time at the academy Collin and a couple of friends started a open minded gallery ‘’Punct’’ for young upcoming artists in Tilburg, the Netherlands, from 2002 till 2006. After the graduation at the art-academy St.joost he moved with his girlfriend to Maastricht, the Nethelands and started a gallery for contemporary art in the city-centre, ‘’Galerie Groen lLicht’’ Currently he is working as a gallery-owner, illustrator and painter. Since 2004 Collin is collaborating on various national and international projects with his good friend, Rutger Termohlen, a illustrator and painter too. The share the same vision on life and work which results in collaboration canvasses with stories about daily life and questioning the society we live in.

Teamed together through the art of graffiti, Mike Baca aka 2ESAE & Fernando Romero aka SKI joined forces with the intentions to learn and grow as artists.

Prior to the thought of ever making a living from creating art, "We were forcing people to view our work around the city, illegally..." They spent years painting the streets and dealing with the repercussions of the law until they decided to do something positive with their talents by forming a collective. They have since put together nearly 50 shows /events both here in the U.S and Internationally. The collective is based on the philosophy of creation through destruction! Transforming the street graffiti perception into positive urban-industrial art.

All members of the collective are based out of New York. They primarily began doing art on the streets and subway systems of the city before ever touching a canvas. After many suggestions and some minor tweaks we finally hit the nail on the head, by producing what we feel is one of the nicest looking vinyl toy pieces to be released this year in collaboration with AdFunture and Arkiv Instant! Once5 releases Basquiat print

If you are a fan of street art, then you must love the paintings of the late artist, Jean Michel Basquiat. The artist who was known for his poetic writings all around New York City as well as his paintings representing issues of heritage and society in a densely collaged manner. Basquiat is also known for his SAMO graffiti. Samo, short for “same ol’ shit.” was often followed by a message. The SAMO writing series ended with the epitaph “Samo is dead.”

In this print, New York artist Once5 includes small symbols that are often found in Basquiat’s paintings such as the triple point crown. Embedded within the grain of the wood you can find many of phrases Basquiat scribed through out the city. These sayings include: “SAMO for the so called avant garde.” “SAMO as a neo art form.” SAMO a pin drops like a pungent odor.” ” SAMO as an escape clause.” and “The whole livery line , bow like this with, the big money all, crushed into these feet.”

Fe fe Talavera’s monster paintings are metaphors for strong and subconscious human emotions like anger, fear, dreams or desire. The colorful fantastic beasts which she connects with the “dark side” of her inner self stand for the artist’s cultural roots as well as the primary and powerful energy of her work in the streets all over the world. Born in 1979 Fefe was brought up as a native half Mexican, half Brazilian in São Paulo where she lives until today besides her second home in Madrid, Spain.

Interested in all kind of “underground” movements, the typical and unique stylistic freedom of the internationally renowned Street Art and Graffiti scene of her hometown made an important impression on the artist. Her raw creative energy thus found much more correspondence in the angled, tribal-like style she developed while working in the streets, than in her studies in fine arts which she finished with a Bachelor at the FAAP in São Paulo. Showing at galleries and accepting certain rules, limits and intolerance of the art market system represent a contradiction for Fefe who is mainly interested in finding public ways to express herself and a common way of communication.

HANDIEDAN (Hanneke Treffers) is an Amsterdam based artist and designer. In 2002 she graduated in photographic design at the Academy of Arts and Design St. Joost in the Netherlands. Although her degree says photography, she has also become well versed in apparel design as well as creating her own fine art.

HANDIEDAN’s mixed media artworks are a delicate cut and paste mixture wrapped in contemporary antiquity. She meticulously combines classic pin-ups and movie images with paint, ink, yellowed sheet music, old fashioned playing cards, money, stamps, Chinese papers, old wood, rusty metal and doodles as a playful mixture of filigree and a newfangled amalgamation of imagery.

We the People and our American Flag

A few months ago a video that Saber created was chosen as a finalist in Organizing for America’s Health Care Video Challenge. You can view the video following this article. Needless to say, the video had a few critics (FOX News Response...), but I doubt any of them understood what it means when an American graffiti artist turns his talent toward such a powerful (and art historically significant) symbol.

When the first flag he painted last year was viewed. It was overtly political in a way that had been uncharacteristic of Saber’s art thus far. Compelling in its raw emotion, the dingy gray of the white stripes was created by words like oil, Katrina and Blackwater. Scratched into the textured surface, those words seem to further stain the flag with the dripping of red American blood. And in the square, he wrote the names of people, a real source of American power. This Tarnished Flag spoke of the anger, sorrow and silent shame of things done in the name of all Americans in the first decade of the 21st century.

Art Institue of Boston Visits "Art Strikes Back"

Art Asylum Boston was happy to welcome the Jr. & Sr. Class mates of "Painting & Illustration" at Art Institute of Boston. Art Asylum was honored to have the students attend a Field Tripp to Study the works of "Art Strikes Back" and attend a private viewing of the group exhibition - we discussed the current state of the art world and shared insight into the various mediums used to create and make up the exhibit. With over 75 pieces on Display it was easy to indulge the students in conversation and exploration. The Class was lead by Jim Hoston Teacher and Artist who directed the group through the gallery space describing and sharing the different methods and techniques.

It was a pleasure to meet and speak with the students and share with them a number of amazing works from around the world and allow them to share their views and opinions as well as ask questions regarding their favorite pieces.

Sego y Ovabl' (One person) love for graffiti was ignited by the writer’s works he observed in the streets of Mexico City, shortly after he chose to take the next step and stand in front of a wall leaving his mark with aerosol paint. His works showcased him in an instinctive way but also with a natural composition and a clear know-how of color use. It became more than a hobby, and he started to spend most of his time doing sketches and illustrating his ideas on a paper which later on would transfer to a wall. Being immersed in that creative process the next step was practice, which lead him to develop a particular style and technique, and was the beginning of an evolving process in his works. Many of his visual and conceptual goals had to do with his childhood and the atmosphere that surrounded him. When he was 12 years old he lived in Oaxaca State for 2 years and suddenly found himself in a totally different environment than that of Mexico City. Vegetation, flora, fauna and the lifestyles of Oaxaca were all different from what he knew at the time.

Later on when working on murals, in a subconscious way he started to add elements, colors, textures and forms from that time lapse in Oaxaca. After four years working as Sego he develops a totally different visual project, inspired by his need of new creative ways to share his ideas. Oval is part of a experimental process that flows as a dynamic aesthetics way of doing graffiti in Mexico. Based on music and the graphic representation of decibels as main inspiration as well as music equalizers, those are the roots of a more abstract work. Sego has somehow managed to continue the two projects, and at least a couple of times joined the two in a wall.

This 30-foot artwork is titled FAKE LOVE and is actually made with a 20ft hand cut stencil on a 30ft backdrop

Art Asylum Boston will be releasing an exclusive hand finished version of "FAKE love". With each fine art print being hand painted by FAKE himself, This very limited edition run will make each piece a unique original with a hand painted back ground, signed and dated by the artist. As you may already know Art Asylum Boston has been a big participant in bringing the fresh new look and feel of Brazilian street art here to the states, and in doing so we have had the honor of working with some amazingly talented artists who bring more than just a new form of aesthetic but a whole new approach to the term street art, with massive murals consisting of refined styles and vibrant colors it has taken street art to new heights and we are proud to introduce Fernando Chamarelli.

Fernando Chamarelli is a graphic designer, illustrator and visual artist. He started drawing cartoons, caricatures and realistic portraits and later became involved with street art and tattooing. It is by merging these different mediums that he creates his art. Chamarelli lives in a multicultural country of contrasts, therefore this environment reflects in his work. Including mosaic, geometric elements,organic forms and harmonic lines connecting symbols, legends, philosophies, religions and customs of ancient and modern civilizations. Within this diversity are the strong influence of Brazilian popular culture and pre-Columbian indigenous art. His art follows the rhythm of globalization, bridging borders and cultures closer. The Characters with serious expressions live in different realities and in situations that appear surreal. Music has a very important role during the creation, helping to give flow.

Our Upcoming show will feature a diverse range of mediums presented by over 30 artists showcasing their talents and inspirations based on and around the Star Wars Universe.

Paying homage to Star Wars and the influence it has had over our culture and society in the last three decades, some of today's top artists have been brought together under one roof to bring you "Art Strikes back"

We will be hosting this show in Boston, MA, For all that are unable to attend we will have an interactive gallery set up online to view and purchase available works via our website: www.artasylumboston.com

We will also have a very limited edition silk screened sticker (designed By: David Friedman of www.ironicsans.com) available for attendee's at opening night. These stickers will be very limited to an edition of only 100 and will be individually numbered (See pic below)

RYCA

RYCA , is a young artist from the east end of London who has taken a less than orthodox route into the art world… he eschewed the traditional university fine art training of his contemporaries opting instead to stay at home and watch Only Fools and Horses on video.

Having trained as a sign writer and maker you will probably have seen his handiwork without even knowing it outside many of London's pubs. RYCA divides his artistic activities between making his increasingly sought after print editions, paintings, multimedia works and various one off pieces. Initially influenced by stencil graffiti and pop culture icons he is increasingly exploring new ways to expand his ideas and incorporate his sign making skills into his artwork.

RYCA will be one of the participating artists in our upcoming group show titled: (Inspirations from above "Art Strikes Back" ) which will feature over 30 artists from around the world showcasing a diverse perspective and paying homage to the impact and inspiration that Star Wars has given us over the last three decades.

Rafael Calazans Pierri (a.k.a Highraff) was born and raised in São Paulo, Brasil, huge city influences... Hitting the streets since 1997, Highraff created step by step his own style of art strongly influenced by graphic design, mixing graffiti, illustration, comic language and psychedelic art, the whole resulting in strong color combination's of organic forms with vectorial patterns.

His most direct influence comes from natural forms like suns, moons, stars, plants, animals, cells, atoms, planets and from the spirit world, represented by natural elements like earth, wind, water and fire. His whole work is a praise to the Nature and it´s elements and cycles ... In that way, spirituality of mother earth, love for life, nature, art, ethical art and ancestral cultures are some deep motivations behind his aesthetic artwork.

Art Asylum Boston would like to take a moment to thank all of you who purchased a "Dean" print the 2nd print released in a series of 3 titled the "Rat Pack" featuring the work of Joshua Budich. Working with Joshua has not only been a fun project to say the least, but through our collaborative efforts we were able to reach our goal of raising $1,000.00 (The Sky) for Joshua's selected foundation: The KoKua Hawaii Foundation.

When we first decided to work together, Joshua had plans to release a two series print featuring two very popular pop culture movie icons known for destroying the cities of Tokyo & Japan. It was at this time we at Art Asylum Boston suggested the idea of doing a rendition of the "Rat pack" featuring three of America's most beloved and revered icons of times past and present. These idolized Icons have had a major influence over many aspects of our culture and have made quite an impact in movies, comedy, style and class... We were very excited to see that Joshua chose to use our Idea of creating a series featuring Sammy, Dean and Frank and we are happy to have made a choice that has been so widely accepted and has been one of Joshua's most successful and fastest selling prints to date. He did an amazing job on selecting the right images as well as the right color scheme catching these honored men in their most simplistic form.

Joshua will be part of our upcoming show titled "inspiration from above" Art Strikes back.

Art Asylum Boston in collaboration with Curbs & Stoops will be bringing Jorge Rodriguez Gerada to create one of his identity pieces in Boston. Rodriguez-Gerada "creates portraits in charcoal of people-until now anonymous-which scale the walls of buildings in our cities in a format that we can begin to describe as gigantic. They are gigantically defying, proud and dignified, more social than political. But let us not be mistaken, the art piece is not the charcoal drawing. The artistic process begins with the search for the city, the building, and most importantly the person to be depicted."

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada most recently hit the headlines with Expectation, a depiction of Barack Obama covering 2.5 acres of Barcelona's coastline which can be seen from GoogleEarth. In this show, his large-scale charcoal drawings depict ordinary people who have been thrust into the limelight overnight due to heroic or unexpected circumstances. One such hero is Captain Chelsey B. Sullenberger III, who safely landed his US Airways Airbus in New York's Hudson River, saving all 155 passengers and crew.
